Crozer Healthrecently recognized Laura ‘Ellie’ DiBernardo R.N., from the Neuroscience ICU at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, as a recipient of The DAISY® Award.

The DAISY® Award is a program that recognizes excellence in nursing and was created by The DAISY® Foundation to highlight the clinical skills, extraordinary passion, and care exemplified by nurses every day. Award recipients consistently demonstrate each of the following criteria: Dedicated, Autonomous, Innovative, Selfless and Extraordinary.

Ellie was nominated for The DAISY® Award by the wife of a patient at Crozer-Chester Medical Center for the compassion and comfort she provided to her husband and family during their visit. “Ellie always had a genuine shine of happiness in her manner of care for my husband, who suffered a large bleed aneurysm. I learned so much from Ellie by watching and asking questions. She responded to every concern with a wonderful teaching style,” the patient’s wife said.  “Ellie never stopped taking care of my husband - asking him questions, having him grip her hands, telling him to pull her close, push her away. Ellie’s spirit is a true passion for giving of her knowledge, values and unbiased opinion – she always made me feel welcome in her space. In my opinion, Ellie gave us the true meaning of what a nurse should be to a patient and their family. She was such a positive display of kindness and compassion. I cannot say enough about the entire Neuro Science ICU team - they worked very well together and truly defined themselves as ‘the team’.”

“Ellie is a valuable member of the NeuroScience ICU team where she consistently embraces and displays our CK-CARES core values,” says Eric Diehl, Senior Administrative Director of Nursing at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. “Ellie is frequently mentioned by our patients, visitors, and staff as a compassionate and competent caregiver.  I am proud that she has received this distinguished award.”

The DAISY® Foundation and The DAISY® Award

The not-for-profit DAISY® Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died in 1999 at the age of 33 from complications from an autoimmune disease. The care that Barnes and his family received from nurses throughout his illness inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Each DAISY® Award honoree is recognized at a public ceremony on his or her unit and receives a certificate, a DAISY® Award pin, and a beautiful hand-carved stone sculpture. In addition, the unit celebrates their colleague’s achievement with Cinnabon cinnamon rolls, which were a favorite of Patrick’s during his illness.
