About Your Surgery

• Before Your Procedure

  Please complete and sign the Health Survey, the Medication Reconciliation and the Conditions of Coverage forms and bring them with you the day of your procedure.

  Have your family physician complete a History and Physical form. This must be completed within 30 days of your procedure. Your surgeon will determine if any preoperative testing is necessary. Tell your doctor about any medications, including aspirin, that you take regularly. You may need to stop taking certain medications prior to your surgery.

  Please arrange for a ride home with a responsible adult. You will not be permitted to drive yourself home. It is also recommended that you have an adult home with you for the first 24 hours after anesthesia.

  A parent or guardian must accompany all children (under 18 year’s of age) to the Center.

• The Day Before Your Procedure

  Call the center between noon and 2 p.m. the day before your procedure to confirm the time of your procedure. Unless you have specific instructions from your physician, do not eat or drink anything, not even gum, hard candy or a glass of water, after midnight the night before your procedure.

  Failure to follow the above instructions may result in cancellation of your procedure.

• The Day of Your Procedure

  Wear loose, comfortable casual clothing. Leave all jewelry and valuables at home. We will provide you with a patient gown and slippers and a bag to store your clothing. Do not wear contacts, wear your glasses.

  Please bring your insurance card, photo ID, and the completed History and Physical, Health Survey, Medication Reconciliation and Conditions of Coverage forms.

• After Your Procedure

  After your procedure, you will be taken to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), or recovery room where you will be monitored and cared for until you are ready to go home. The duration of time you spend in the PACU is variable, but usually ranges from 30-90 minutes.

  In the event of unforeseen complications, you may be admitted to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

  You must have a responsible adult available to take you home.

  The Center nurse will review your home care instructions with you and/or your escort, and provide you with a written copy of these instructions.
  It is not unusual to feel slightly dizzy or sleepy after receiving anesthesia and undergoing surgery.

• At Home
  • Have a responsible adult with you for at least the first 24 hours.
  • Do not drive or operate heavy machinery.
  • Follow the special instructions provided to you by your physician and or the staff.
  • Do not take any medications without your physician’s approval.
  • Do not drink any alcoholic beverages.
  • Call your physician with any unusual symptoms.
  • A Center nurse will call you the first business day after your procedure.
