Asthma
Crozer Health’s asthma specialists assist children and their families in the diagnosis, treatment and management of asthma.
Who suffers from asthma?
Asthma disproportionately affects low-income populations, minorities, and children who live in urban areas, all of whom experience greater morbidity and mortality due to asthma. Hospitalization rates for African-American children are three times those for Caucasian children, and deaths among African-American children are four times those of Caucasian children.
Why is asthma a major health concern?
Asthma is the most serious common chronic disease of childhood, affecting more than six million American children, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Asthma is a leading cause of school absenteeism, accounting for more than 14 million missed days each year. It’s the third-ranking cause of hospitalization and the fourth most common cause of urgent primary care office visits.
Common Triggers
Being aware of common triggers for asthma to reduce effects and need for medication is important. Common triggers for asthma attacks include: exercise; exposure to cold air; sudden temperature changes; allergic reactions to pollen, mold, dust, or pet dander; excitement and stress; and cigarette smoke. It is estimated that asthma worsens in 500,000 children who are exposed to second hand smoke. When asthma is properly managed, such as avoiding triggers, taking prescribed medications, monitoring for warning signs, and knowing what to do during an asthma attack, most children affected by the chronic illness can lead normal, healthy and active lives.
