Crozer Health Internal Medicine Resident Wins ACP Young Achievers National Abstract Competition
Crozer HealthInternal Medicine resident Jian Liang Tan, M.D., was recognized as a National Winner in the American College of Physicians (ACP) Young Achiever Abstract Competition at the ACP Internal Medicine 2017 Meeting held recently in San Diego. His abstract was chosen as a winner in the Resident/Fellow Clinical Vignette category.
The national abstract competition is a part of the ACP’s Internal Medicine Meeting, the organization’s annual scientific meeting. The competition highlights residents who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership early in their medical education and training. There are five different categories of abstracts, including Basic Research, Clinical Research, Quality Improvement-Patient Safety, High-Value Care and Clinical Vignette. A “Clinical Vignette” is a report of one or more cases that illustrates a new disease entity, or a prominent or unusual clinical feature of an established disease.
Tan’s abstract was titled “A Sweet Diagnosis for a Non-Resolving Rash.” The abstract included a case report of a patient with Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), also known as pre-leukemia, who began suffering from a sudden onset rash. This rash was diagnosed as Subcutaneous Sweet Syndrome (SSS), a rare variant form of Sweet Syndrome (SS).
“I was humbled by the experience and thankful for all the people who have guided me to where I am today. This recognition would mark the beginning of my medical career,” Tan said.
Kshitij Thakur, M.D., is the associate program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Crozer-Chester Medical Center and also served as Tan’s mentor throughout this process. “Dr. Tan is one of the most hardworking interns I have come across. The current class of Internal Medicine interns has been very proactive with scholarly activity very early during the residency,” Thakur said.
