DCMH Telemetry Nurse Purchases Clothing for NICU Babies

As any parent who has a child in a Neonatal Intensive care Unit (NICU), the time their baby spends there can be both mentally and physically exhausting.

That's why members of the NICU staffs at Delaware County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) and Crozer-Chester Medical Center dedicate themselves to providing the best care possible to our tiniest patients.

That tradition of caring, which runs deep through the entire health system, was recently taken to a unprecedented level when the DCMH Maternal/Child Health team got the surprise of their lives.

It happened when Lora Urso, R.N., a coworker from a telemetry unit at the hospital, showed up one day with boxes that contained more than $2,300 worth of new clothes for premature babies, known as preemies.

Lora was shopping during the recent 90-percent-off going-out-of-business sale at Babies ‘R Us when a thought struck her. She would buy up as much clothing as she could that was sized to fit preemies and donate it to the NICU at DCMH.

But Lora did not stop there. She also saw clothing ideal for 24-month old children and bought all she could for patients of the Pediatric Unit at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

Rose Amato, RNC-OB, BSN, MHA, nurse director of DCMH’s Maternal/Child Health Unit, says that Lora’s act of kindness ensures that premature infants will have warm clothes and outfits to wear while in the hospital. Her gift will continue to give back to patients who she’ll likely never meet – and the grateful parents who await their return home.
