Crozer Health Donates Healthplex Sports Club to YMCA
Y to Take Ownership in January 2020
Crozer Health is partnering with the Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County to bring its expertise and leadership to the Healthplex Sports Club, which has been located on the Springfield Hospital campus since 1996. Crozer Health is donating the business and all of its assets to the Y, with a transition of operations scheduled to take place on January 18, 2020.
Crozer Health will provide an annual donation to the YMCA over the next 10 years to help support the Y’s mission. This does not include the grounds or building, meaning the municipality will continue to receive tax dollars.
“Our community values the Healthplex Sports Club, so we found a world-class organization that will carry on the Healthplex’s founding mission to make wellness accessible to this community,” said Crozer Health CEO, Sharif Omar. “The YMCA specializes in running community-based fitness facilities, so the choice to trust the Y was clear.”
The Y has committed to investing in capital improvements to the Healthplex, including new exercise equipment, an investment in life safety tools, and upgrades to the aquatics facilities. New programs and classes to be offered by the Y include:
- Youth and family-oriented programming, accommodating everyone from infants to seniors;
- Child watch for parents who want to use the Y’s wellness equipment and classes;
- Special programming for veterans, seniors, and those recovering from addiction;
- A partnership with LiveStrong, to promote the importance of physical activity after a cancer diagnosis;
- Competitive family membership rates, including free membership for students in seventh grade;
- Participation in insurance reimbursement programs, for members who have health benefits with wellness coverage.
YMCA facilities have been serving Delaware County since 1948, and the Eastern Delaware County Y includes facilities in Lansdowne and Ridley, along with a child-care center in Marple and school-age programs in Springfield.
“Partnering with Crozer Health will help the YMCA bring our family programming and commitment to health and wellness to a greater segment of our community,” said Michael Ranck, President and CEO of the YMCA of Eastern Delaware County. “We have great plans for the 175,000 square-foot facility, and our development plan is sure to generate even more community benefit in the near future. The fact that the health system is donating the Healthplex to the YMCA leaves us with far greater resources to invest in equipment, upgrades and employee talent.”
Both Crozer Health and the Y are committed to making this transition and subsequent upgrades as seamless as possible, without disruption to services. Representatives from the YMCA will be on-site at the Healthplex regularly until the January transition, to respond to your questions. Further information about the YMCA of Eastern Delaware County can be found at their website https://cyedc.org, or email Hplex@cyedc.org, or phone 610-557-9622.
Additionally, Healthplex employees will be interviewed for employment with the Y, which will help ensure continuity of service to the membership. Over time, existing Healthplex members will transition to YMCA rates, which include family memberships and financial aid for members who qualify. Further information will be made available to members and the community as the January transition date nears.
