Crozer Health Becomes First System on East Coast to Use Novel Technology for Soft-Tissue Ablation
Aliya Technology Shows Extreme Promise in Treating Difficult-to-Treat Cancers
Crozer Health’s Joseph Whitlark, M.D. recently was the first thoracic surgeon on the East Coast to perform a novel, minimally invasive procedure for a patient with difficult-to-treat metastatic cancer. Crozer Health is only one of 7 health centers in the U.S. to offer the Aliya Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) technology.
The Aliya system from Galvanize Therapeutics is designed to ablate the target cells. It appears to stimulate the patient’s own immune system to activate against the tumor. This advancement is huge and is changing the face of cancer treatment, even in its early use.
“We’re really excited,” said Dr. Whitlark. “This could be a game-changer.”
The Aliya PEF technology delivers brief, high-amplitude, non-thermal pulsed energy to target tissue, destabilizing and killing the cells. The non-thermal energy does not damage surrounding cells or tissue, enabling ablation near critical structures, such as nerves or blood vessels. It is minimally invasive, delivered through a single needle, and the patient may have little pain or discomfort. The Aliya waveform and electrode are designed to maximize the potential for releasing tumor antigens and may stimulate an immune response, potentially disrupting the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment.
Dr. Whitlark was recently interviewed by the Delaware County Daily Times about the technology and its promising results with a recent patient. Read the article here.
