Program Overview
We believe that the best way to train emergency medicine residents is with seasoned specialists in an emergency-medicine and acute-care setting. Consequently, the vast majority of your clinical training will occur in such an environment. There are no floor months. We emphasize rotations that provide the skills and experiences needed for emergency medicine.
Pediatric Experience
Often a deficiency in emergency medicine programs, the exposure to pediatrics in this program is varied and extensive. Importantly, the residents care for children on every emergency medicine rotation during the training period. This continued exposure allows complete comfort in managing pediatric emergencies.
The pediatric experience at Crozer-Chester Medical Center (CCMC) is complemented by two rotations in the Emergency Department and one rotation in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Emergency medicine residents may also elect to complete additional rotations in pediatric emergency care during their selective blocks.
Trauma Experience
Emergency medicine residents receive extensive trauma exposure rotating on the trauma service at the Level II Crozer Regional Trauma Center (the only trauma center in Delaware County) and at Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children (the only pediatric Level I Trauma Center in the state of Delaware).
During the second program year, emergency medicine residents are key members of both the CCMC trauma team and surgical intensive care team. During the first two years, residents play an integral part of the evaluation, acute stabilization and airway management of trauma patients. The trauma is high acuity and includes substantial amounts of both penetrating and blunt trauma.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Experience
Residents will have the opportunity for extensive involvement in EMS. CCMC provides online medical command for Crozer Health ’s EMS teams. Each resident will spend a month’s rotation on EMS in the second year, with extensive field experience. Residents also complete a base station medical command course and provide online medical command. Advanced EMS experience and training is readily available as a selective rotation in the second year.
Ultrasound Experience
Ultrasound is becoming the indispensable tool of the modern emergency physician. As such our emergency medicine residents will receive dedicated time their intern year, additional opportunities their senior year, and regular opportunities while on shift to develop their skills in all core emergency ultrasound modalities as well as select advanced ultrasound modalities. They will have dedicated time to develop their skills of image acquisition, image interpretation, and be exposed to the research underlying the utility of bedside ultrasound imaging. Crozer-Chester Medical Center is a high acuity emergency department and our residents will become well versed in the utility of bedside ultrasound in the resuscitation of the critically ill. They will have the opportunity to work one on one with our Ultrasound Director and Ultrasound Fellow.
Research Program
This program introduces residents to research and the scholarly process, including exploration of a specific area in emergency medicine, active study of that area with recorded findings and the dissemination of those findings with the academic community via the written word.
Within the first month, you will join a research group and collaborate with other members of the team on a project that the group is working on. The Program also contains protected time for research throughout your training. In addition, the resident is actively involved in Journal Club.
