Trauma Care
In a medical emergency, you need care you can count on. As the only trauma center in Delaware County, the Crozer Regional Trauma Center at Crozer-Chester Medical Center meets the high standards required to earn its designation as a Regional Level II Trauma Center by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation.
Crozer-Chester Medical Center offers a comprehensive approach with an experienced multidisciplinary team of physicians and experts who are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to diagnose and treat traumatic injuries. The in-house team ensures our immediate availability to meet all trauma patient care needs - from admission to discharge to ongoing recovery and rehabilitation.
The Trauma Team
The Trauma Team led by fellowship-trained trauma surgeons coordinates trauma patient care with physicians and nurses from departments across Crozer Health, including emergency medicine physicians, anesthesiologists, interventional radiologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons and other surgical specialists. Additionally, our team collaborates with professionals in Crozer’s Radiology, Laboratory, Respiratory Therapy, Social Work and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation departments to provide comprehensive care throughout a patient's stay.
On the Scene
The trauma team works closely with our community’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals to provide lifesaving care at the scene of an emergency. When an EMS unit identifies a traumatic injury, they immediately notify the Trauma Center; emergency medical technicians and paramedics are then guided to provide the most effective care for the patient on the way to the hospital. In turn, the trauma team gathers the information needed to prepare to treat the patient when he or she arrives.
At the Emergency Department
Trauma patients receive initial treatment at Crozer's Emergency Department. The facility includes four trauma bays (including one dedicated to burn and pediatric patients) featuring the latest technology and equipment necessary for life-saving efforts. Our radiology department provides diagnostic radiographs and computed tomography (CT) capabilities as well as endovascular treatment of injuries.
Surgical Trauma Care
The Surgical Trauma Unit (STU) is a dedicated eight-bed intensive care unit (ICU)for our most critically injured patients, which is directed by 24/7 in-house trauma surgeons who are board certified in Surgical Critical Care. Multi-disciplinary ICU rounds are conducted by trauma surgeons to include trauma credentialed nurses, trauma nurse practitioners, residents, respiratory therapists, and a clinical pharmacist and nutritionist, all dedicated to providing critical trauma care.
Burn-injured patients are cared for at the Nathan Speare Regional Burn Treatment Center with care directed by dedicated burn surgeons.
The trauma team offers Surgical Critical Care Intensivist Service for Crozer Health surgeons, which enhances the continuity and quality of care for patients undergoing complex surgery, especially those who have advanced cardiac or pulmonary conditions that increase their risk after surgery. The Intensivists make daily visits/assessments throughout the duration of the patient’s stay in the STU.
In the Hospital
Every morning, our dedicated trauma team of surgeons, residents, nurse practitioners, social workers, case managers, physical and occupational therapists, nutritionist and pharmacist meet to review each patient's status prior to visiting every patient at the bedside where the team assesses the patient’s condition and progress, and updates his or her daily care plan.
Throughout the day, as the plan of care is implemented, physicians and trauma nurse practitioners respond to the bedside immediately at the request of the nurse. Trauma providers are also available to meet with the patient and their families to discuss their status and engage them in decision making related to the immediate and long-term plan of care. As needed, the trauma team may consult rehabilitative liaisons and palliative care for patients and their families.
All inpatient units such as the operating room (OR), post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), intermediate care unit and medical-surgical general care unit are staffed with trauma credentialed nurses who are prepared to provide care for all types of traumatic injuries throughout all phases of care during the patient's stay.
