Curriculum & Schedule
Curriculum & Schedule
We have a community-based, highly academic curriculum. Interns learn the fundamentals of inpatient medicine while senior residents transition to mostly outpatient clinical work. Our program emphasizes regular didactics and scholarly activity.

During your first year, you will work mainly at Crozer-Chester Medical Center on various inpatient services including medicine, labor & delivery, and ICU. Throughout the year you will have anywhere from one to three half days per week in the office seeing your own panel of patients. You will also spend three months on our own family medicine inpatient service at Taylor Hospital.
Call Schedule
Our call schedule is very reasonable. Call varies based on your rotation and academic year. You will be scheduled for call only when you are on the corresponding rotation. We do have a jeopardy system in place for emergencies.
During your intern year, call mostly consists of weekend coverage. You will work 6-day weeks while rotating on inpatient pediatrics, medicine, ICU, and our inpatient service (FHC). This averages out to about 6 months of the academic year. You will help cover night float while on inpatient pediatrics and ICU. Your only 24-hour call shifts are on FHC, where you will do 2 per month (Saturday AM to Sunday AM).
In addition to the 6-day work weeks as described above, you may be scheduled for night float on your Ob/Gyn rotation and have weekend shifts on your ER rotation depending on the schedule.

During your second two years, you will transition from inpatient to outpatient medicine. You will spend at least 3-4 half days per week as a PGY2 and 4-5 half days per week as a PGY3 seeing your own panel of patients in the office. The remainder of your time will be spent rotating through different specialty offices such as orthopedics, endocrinology, and cardiology. You have one month of elective as a PGY2 and five months of electives as a PGY3. You will complete your continuity deliveries (2 required) at Crozer Chester Medical Center. As a senior resident, you will also be responsible for our Family Medicine inpatient service at Taylor Hospital. PGY2 residents have two months on our inpatient service and cover 4 weeks of night float. PGY3 residents have one month as chief of the service and cover 2 weeks of night float.
Call Schedule
As a senior resident, your call is mostly limited to our inpatient service. While on FHC, you either cover a Sunday day shift or accompany an intern on a Saturday 24-hour call shift
Senior residents also cover our night float. Night float is interspersed throughout a senior resident’s schedule as 6-night weeks (Sunday PM to Saturday AM) in one to two week blocks. PGY2’s have 4 total weeks of night float while PGY3’s have 2 total weeks.
PGY2’s also rotate at Nemours Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Department for one month, where they average 6-day work weeks between ER shifts and office sessions.
As a result, this call schedule equates to about 4 months of 6-day work weeks as a PGY2 and 6 weeks of 6-day work weeks as a PGY3.
In addition to inpatient call responsibilities, senior residents work evening hours for our two primary care offices. ChesPenn Center for Family Health has evening hours from 5-7 PM every Monday, while the Center for Family Health has evening hours every Wednesday. Coverage rotates, with two senior residents working each session at a time. This equates to about 1-2 evening hour sessions per resident a month.
After seeing a patient for multiple prenatal visits, a senior resident is assigned to the patient as an obstetrics continuity. Once this patient is in labor, the corresponding resident physician meets the patient at Crozer Chester Medical Center and works closely with the Ob/Gyn department until delivery. As described above, each resident will have 2 continuity deliveries prior to graduation.
Didactics
Held at the Center for Family Health, residents have dedicated lecture time every Wednesday morning from 8 AM to noon. Residents on outpatient rotations attend our weekly lectures. This protected education time is a great opportunity to learn evidence-based medicine from faculty, co-residents, and specialty colleagues.
In addition to our Wednesday morning didactics, our residency conducts a morning report via zoom on Tuesday mornings from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM. Mostly resident led and inpatient focused, residents learn innovative, inpatient medicine from experiences and patient-cases on our inpatient service.
