Crozer Health Appoints Aley Tohamy, M.D., FACS, FASMBS Chair of Surgery
Aley Tohamy, M.D., FACS, FASMBS has recently been appointed the chair of the Department of Surgery at Crozer Health. Tohamy has held the position on an interim basis for the past 18 months.
Tohamy is a bariatric surgeon who has been a member of Crozer Health ’s medical staff since 2014. As chair, Tohamy says his primary goal is to raise awareness of and grow Crozer Health ’s surgical services.
Under his leadership, and in partnership with the Crozer Health Medical Group, the health system has added general and vascular surgeons, trauma surgeons, and surgical specialists in areas that include oncology, bariatrics and gastroenterology.
“We have minimally invasive surgeons in every specialty,” Tohamy says. “We’ve hired vascular surgeons who can perform endovascular surgery as well as minimally invasive procedures. We are working hard to leave our footprint in this area.”
Tohamy recognizes the challenges that have faced the health system and the industry as a whole over the past several years. “Changes in healthcare policies have impacted hospitals nationwide,” he says. “We must continue to be aware of and understand these changes to provide the best care possible to our patients.”
Tohamy credits his colleagues and administrators for helping to keep Crozer Health competitive during a difficult time for the healthcare industry. “The administration has worked collaboratively with all departments to make sure physicians’ voices are heard,” he says. “My colleagues have been very supportive; all disciplines work well together to serve our community.”
Thomas J. Bader, M.D., chief medical officer for Crozer Health, says Tohamy is a respected leader, both in his field and within our health system.
“He is a skilled clinician who is calm and kind, pays meticulous attention to detail, and focuses on the patient as his number-one priority. In return, his patients are loyal and think the world of him,” Bader says. “Dr. Tohamy is also a respected educator. He brings these same qualities and passion to his administrative roles, and I am pleased to welcome him as chair of the Department of Surgery.”
Tohamy earned his medical degree from Alexandria Medical School in Egypt. He completed his residency in general surgery at the former Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, and his fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. “I’m honored to be chair of Surgery,” Tohamy concludes. My colleagues and I will work hard as a team, and I feel we will be successful. It’s a great responsibility and I’m happy that they have put their trust in me. We will not disappoint.”
