Sandra Gawchik, D.O. Named 2017 Woman in Allergy by American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology

Crozer Healthphysician Sandra Gawchik, D.O., co-chief of the Department of Allergy and Immunology, is the 2017 recipient of the prestigious Woman in Allergy Award from the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. This peer-elected award, which was presented at a dinner and awards ceremony at the 2017 Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston, Mass, recognizes the contributions Gawchik has made to the specialty.

“The College is very pleased to recognize Dr. Gawchik with the Woman in Allergy Award,” said Stephen A. Tiles, M.D., president of the ACAAI. Tiles also noted Gawchik’s years of service as an active member of many committees, calling her a “tireless supporter of the College.”

Gawchik has mentored physicians that are new to the field, trained allergy fellowship program participants, and has also been a member or a chair of several committees for the national organization. However, Gawchik considers her greatest contributions to be as a clinician, providing asthma screening, patient education, and ongoing quality of care. Gawchik is also President of Asthma and Allergy Research Associates and clinical associate professor of pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson Medical College.

Gawchik says she was surprised and delighted to have been recognized for service in the field of allergy by a group of over 6,000 of her peers. “I love helping people with allergic diseases because, with diagnosis and treatment, we can change their quality of life,” she said. “Patients no longer have to suffer.”

A frequent contributor to publications, as well as television and radio news shows, on the topics of allergy and allergic disease, Gawchik has received numerous awards and has lectured nationally and internationally.

Gawchik is a graduate of Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery. She completed a rotating internship and residency at Cherry Hill Medical Center in Cherry Hill, NJ, and a pediatric residency at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. She completed a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians, and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.
