Imaging and Diagnostics

  • Endoscopic ultrasound is an important diagnostic tool for patients with tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and bile ducts.

Endoscopic ultrasound uses sound waves to examine the wall of the esophagus, stomach and intestine, as well as structures near the gastrointestinal tract. Ultrasound waves create pictures of wall layers along with adjacent organs, blood vessels and lymph nodes. Abnormalities can be sampled safely and easily.

  • Crozer Health has partnered with NeoGenomics Laboratories, a world leader in specialized oncology testing, to provide the most advanced molecular diagnostics and precision medicine for our cancer patients. With this relationship, our pathologists can perform tumor analysis completely within the health system, allowing faster turnaround times and improved coordination with our oncologists.

  • A sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node to which cancer cells are most likely to spread from a primary tumor. A sentinel node biopsy can be used to determine the extent, or stage, of cancer in the body.

During a sentinel lymph node biopsy, a specially trained surgeon injects a radioactive substance and/or dye near the tumor. This helps your surgeon locate the sentinel node so that he or she can remove it. Then, the surgeon sends it to a lab for examination.

  • New studies are under way at Crozer Health and across the country that may limit breast surgery to removal of only the first lymph node—the sentinel lymph node. The sentinel lymph node may indicate the likelihood of breast cancer spreading to other parts of the body.

Sentinel lymph node biopsy has been proven successful in the treatment of melanoma skin cancer. Preliminary results from national clinical trials with breast patients have produced exciting results, and the FDA may approve this procedure for breast cancer treatment.

  • Crozer Health offers minimally invasive biopsy procedures that involve a small incision in the skin, avoiding the need for an open surgical procedure and thus reducing recovery time. These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis; they do not require surgery.

  • Crozer Health is Delaware County's leading choice for comprehensive outpatient medical imaging services. You’ll find these tests and procedures available at Crozer Health facilities:

    • Computed tomography (CT scan)
    • Fluoroscopy
    • Mammography
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
    • Nuclear medicine
    • PET/CT scans
    • Ultrasound
    • X-rays

Treatment Options

Medical Oncology

Medical oncology is the treatment of cancer using medication and treatment methods other than radiation. Working closely with other cancer specialists, medical oncologists provide primary cancer treatment, continuous follow-up, consultations and help to create plans for cancer management.

Radiation Oncology

About half of all people who develop cancer receive radiation therapy at some time during their illness. This treatment involves the use of high-energy ionizing radiation in the form of X-rays, electron beams or a combination of each.

Surgical Oncology

A wide range of surgical specialties are represented at the Crozer Health hospitals, including general, colorectal, gynecologic, head and neck, neurological, ophthalmologic, orthopedic, plastic, thoracic and urologic surgery.

Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology uses blood vessels as a pathway to diagnose and treat certain diseases - including cancer or abnormalities of arteries, veins, or organs. Interventional radiologists work closely with referring physicians to perform procedures which may benefit the cancer treatment.

They focus on educating patients and families, facilitating communication with other physicians, finding appropriate support groups and offering aid in insurance matters.

This assistance is FREE – there’s no charge to you or your insurance company. Our patient care navigators, based at our three regional cancer centers, support patients at all Crozer Health hospitals.
